How to Transport Antique Furniture

Antique furniture is often heavier, more fragile and more valuable than it looks. Careful preparation prevents most damage.

Remove loose parts

Take out drawers, shelves, keys and glass where practical, and wrap them separately. Secure doors so they can't swing open.

Wrap, don't tape

Use moving blankets and soft padding. Never apply tape directly to polished or veneered surfaces.

Lift correctly

Lift from the strongest part of the frame, never by arms, tops or mouldings. Two people are safer for most pieces.

Secure in transit

Stand items upright where appropriate and strap them to the vehicle so nothing shifts. Avoid stacking.

Use a specialist

For valuable or delicate pieces, a dedicated antique courier reduces handling and risk.
