What Is Freight Forwarding?

A freight forwarder organises the movement of goods on your behalf, choosing the right carriers, vehicles, routes and services so you do not have to manage several transport suppliers yourself.

What a freight forwarder does

A forwarder takes your requirement, sources suitable transport, coordinates collection and delivery, keeps you updated and deals with problems along the way. You have one point of contact rather than several hauliers.

Freight forwarder vs haulier

A haulier moves goods in its own vehicles, so its options are limited to its own fleet. A freight forwarder matches each consignment with the right haulier and service, which gives you more flexibility on vehicle type, routing and capacity.

Carrier sourcing

Good forwarding starts with the load, not the vehicle. We look at your goods, timings and budget, then source a suitable carrier from our trusted transport partner network.

Groupage

Groupage combines smaller consignments from several customers into one vehicle. It is cost-efficient for pallets and smaller shipments, particularly between the UK and Europe.

LTL

LTL (less than truckload), also called part load, is for larger consignments that do not need a full trailer. Your goods share space and you pay for what you use.

FTL

FTL (full truck load) gives your consignment a dedicated vehicle, with direct routing and less handling.

European road freight

Road freight forwarding covers movements between the UK and mainland Europe by ferry or the Channel Tunnel, using groupage, part loads, full loads or dedicated vehicles.

Documentation

Goods moving between the UK and EU need the correct customs paperwork, which depends on the goods and destination. We advise on what is needed and coordinate with partners, including customs agents where required.

Benefits of one point of contact

One person who understands your requirement, flexible vehicle choice, scalable capacity for busy periods and clear communication from enquiry to delivery.
